Election of officers was held and Milton Britt was elected chairman of the board and past president Phil Shaw was elected Vice President. All other officers remained the same.

There have been several staffing changes at Bentonville this past year.  Most recently, Derrick Brown was promoted from Programs Coordinator to Assistant Site Manager and Megan Phillips joined the staff as the new Programs Coordinator.  Megan has worked for NC Historic Sites since May 2008 as a Historic Interpreter at Brunswick Town/Ft. Anderson where she served as Gift Shop Manager, Colonial Programs Coordinator, and Volunteer Coordinator among many other duties.  Megan has a BA in History from UNC-Pembroke and an MA in Public History from NC State University.  “Everyone has been so welcoming and I am excited to be a part of such a great team.  Even though the Battle of Bentonville lasted only three days, the opportunities for historic interpretation at this site are extensive and I am learning more and more each day,” she says.  The addition of Megan brings Bentonville’s full-time staff up to five people just in time for the 145th Bentonville Battle Re-enactment.

Reproduction Artillery Installed on the Battlefield

The BBHA purchased two reproduction artillery pieces to be placed on the battlefield.  The 12 Pound Napoleon and a 3 inch Ordnance Rifle were installed in March 2006. These are a welcome addition to the interpretive tools we have at Bentonville Battlefield. The Ordnance Rifle was placed on the Morris Farm at the Confederate High Tide Tour Stop and the Napoleon was placed in the exhibit trenches across from the Visitor Center. Both have become popular for visitors to pose for photographs. Within the next few months interpretive signage will be install to explain the operation of the guns.

House Bill 129/Senate Bill 358

These Bills were passed by the North Carolina Legislature in 2008. Bentonville Battlefield State Historic Site will now benefit from any land rentals, timber harvesting or sale of surplus building on the battlefield property. This will go a long way in benefiting the site. We appreciate all the support from the State Legislators and the public ion supporting these bills.
